In 1940, the United States Army requested a 1/4 ton "lightweight reconnaissance vehicle" designed to the Army's specifications. Willys-Overland answered the call with the Willys Quad prototype. After two years, numerous upgrades and prototypes, and rigorous testing, Willys-Overland was awarded the contract to provide the Army with what was known as the Willys MB Jeep. Fast-forward to the present day, Jeeps have been available for civilian use since 1945 and are heading toward an electric future at a rapid pace. Jeep's electric future began in 2021 with the Jeep Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid. In the 2023 model year, the Wrangler 4xe adds the Willys trim level, capturing the heritage of the Jeep brand. What Powers the Jeep Wrangler 4xe?
A plug-in hybrid electric vehicle powertrain powers the Jeep 4xe lineup. The Wrangler 4xe features a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 engine, two electric motors, and a 400-volt battery pack. This gives the Wrangler the gas equivalent of 49 MPG, 375 horsepower, and 470 lb-ft of torque. Of course, Jeep made sure the hybrid power didn't impact the Wrangler's off-roading abilities, so they gave it standard Selec-Trac 4x4 for phenomenal performance on all terrains without the driver needing to push any buttons or pull any levers. An 8-speed automatic transmission powers the Selec-Trac system.
How Can I Tell the Difference Between the Willys and Other Wrangler 4xe's?
When the Wrangler was introduced, it adopted the Willys MB Jeep, featuring an open-air design, round headlights, and an upright grille. Over the years, many things have changed in terms of size, shape, and features. However, the inspiration from the original World War II Jeep can still be seen. The Wrangler Willys 4xe can be picked out among the lineup of other Wrangler 4xe models mostly because of its unique decals. On either side of the hood, you'll see 'Willys' printed in big, bold military-style lettering. Additionally, the rear swing gate wears an 'Electric 4-Wheel Drive' decal. All of the exterior trim, including the decals, badges, tow hooks, and emblems, are painted in Electric Blue to stand out against the body color as a symbol of the electric power. Stepping inside the Wrangler Willys 4xe, you'll find all-weather floor mats, push-button ignition, nine-speaker Alpine premium audio, a 7-inch infotainment touchscreen with Android Auto/Apple CarPlay, and more!
Capability of the Wrangler Willys 4xe
While the Wrangler Rubicon 4xe is recognized as the top dog in off-road capability among the lineup, the Willys trim can take on anything you need it to as well! The black 17-inch steel wheels wear aggressive 32-inch mud-terrain tires to provide unrivaled grip. Additionally, the Trac-Lock limited-slip rear differential helps carry momentum while crawling over rugged terrain. The undercarriage and its precious components are protected from trail obstacles and debris by high-strength steel skid plates and the Rubicon's cab rock rails. The Willys also adopts the Wrangler Rubicon 4xe's FOX shock absorbers to better tackle jagged terrain.
