Parking Lot Smarts

We are headed into the season of busy stores and really crowded parking lots. Most drivers and pedestrians are fine during the rest of the year, but when it's cold and crowded and people are rushing, good decision making seems to take a backseat.

Here are a few important things to remember.

Stay off the phone.
Most states have rules about driving while using phones, and whether they like them or not, drivers know and understand this. But in parking lots and garages, a few studies suggest that 50-60% of drivers start fiddling with their phones. It's easy to think that once you've made it off the road, the dangerous part of driving is over, but distracted driving is distracted driving, no matter where you are. Although the speed may be slower, you will often need to stop suddenly for pedestrians or cars that are reversing. Wait until you are parked to pull out your phone to text, turn off your GPS, or check your shopping list, but then make sure you put your phone away for the walk inside as well. Pedestrians also need to be distraction free!

Choose a smart spot.
When it's cold or rainy or you're in a hurry, it's so tempting to look for the closest spot. Sometimes you'll get lucky, but more often than not those spots come with more risk than reward. The close spots are where you'll see more traffic, so backing out of the spot later may mean long waits while other cars and pedestrians pass by. Your car is much more likely to get dinged by shopping carts, passing pedestrians with bags or strollers, or even other car doors.

If a car has pulled in close to the line or misaligned, it's not a smart choice to park right next to them, but there are also other spots you may want to avoid. It's very convenient, especially if you have small children, to park right next to the cart return, but there's a definite risk of having your car bumped repeatedly by carts.

Parking further away may not always feel convenient, but it's certainly safer, easier, and good exercise too.

Secure your car and your valuables.
There was a recent issue in our town with car break ins in parking lots, but it turned out that almost all the cars that were broken into were left unlocked - some with the keys still inside! When you leave your car, lock it, take your keys, and make sure that any valuables (laptops, purses, shopping bags) aren't in plain sight.
