Off-Road Capability of the 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L

Now Available at Reedman-Toll CDJR!

The Grand Cherokee L may be a full-size SUV with enough space for the whole family and the dog, but that doesn't mean it misses out on any of the legendary Jeep fun! The standard 290 horsepower 3.6L V6 engine provides enough power for any adventure, but for some additional power, a 5.7L V8 is available with 358 horsepower! Coupled with that power, the three available 4x4 drivetrains, traction management, and more make the Grand Cherokee L ready to take on trails, inclement weather, and just about anything else you are! Continue reading this page to take a look at all the features and equipment that make the world's first three-row Jeep so capable!

Legendary 4x4 Systems

When you think of off-road vehicles, Jeep is most likely the first brand that comes to mind. Three of Jeep's most capable 4x4 systems are available for the 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L. Quadra-Trac I is the first available 4x4 system and employs a single-speed transfer case to appropriately distribute engine power to the axle that has the most traction to counteract wheel slip. Quadra-Trac II is also available and employs a two-speed transfer case with 4-Low mode for low-speed crawling control. This system also employs a group of sensors and automatically redistributes torque to the wheel with the most traction when a loss of traction is detected. Lastly, Quadra-Drive II also employs a two-speed transfer case and can sometimes predict wheel slippage and make the necessary adjustments before a loss of traction occurs. Additionally, Quadra-Drive II employs an electronic limited-slip rear differential to aid in traction control. Quadra-Trac I and Quadra-Trac II are available to the Laredo and Altitude trims while standard on the Overland trim. Quadra-Drive II is available to the Overland trim when equipped with the Off-Road Package, while it comes standard for the Summit and Summit Reserve models.

World-Class Traction Management

While the available 4x4 systems instinctively adjust themselves, drivers may still want control over the vehicle's capability. All 4x4 variants of the Grand Cherokee L feature Jeep's Selec-Terrain traction management system. A scrolling switch on the center console allows drivers to shift to and from Sport, Snow, Sand/Mud, and Auto modes. In addition, Rock mode is added to models equipped with a two-speed transfer case. These drive modes give drivers the option to coordinate 4x4 torque split, braking and handling, steering, suspension, and up to six different powertrains to provide optimal control over any different road surface. Selec-Terrain also adjusts transmission shift points, steering feel, throttle control, the transfer case, and the anti-lock braking system to maximize control. For example, Sport mode raises transmission shift points and increases throttle response for better on-road performance. In contrast, Rock mode lowers transmission shift points and optimizes the torque split for low-speed crawling control.

Ride on Air

Quadra-Lift air suspension is available for the Overland trim with the Off-Road Package and standard on the Summit trims. With this air ride suspension system, drivers get adjustable ride height to best suit the road surface, and adaptive damping allows the system to adjust itself to provide a smooth ride on uneven terrain. Quadra-Lift comes with five height settings on a scrolling switch. NRH, Park, Aero, Off-Road 1, and Off-Road 2. Normal Ride Height (NRH) is 8.3 inches, which is the default setting. Park mode lowers the ground clearance to 6.4 inches to allow for easy entrance and exit. Aero mode lowers the suspension from NRH to 7.3 inches to provide better aerodynamics for highway cruising, optimizing performance and fuel economy. Off-Road 1 raises the suspension to 9.9 inches of ground clearance for light off-roading and clearance over snow-covered roads. Finally, Off-Road 2 raises the suspension to the maximum ride height of 10.9 inches for rugged off-roading. The Quadra-Lift settings also coordinate with the Selec-Terrain system. An example of this is when the Selec-Terrain is set to Rock mode, Quadra-Lift will shift to Off-Road 2, or when Selec-Terrain is set to Sport mode, the air shocks will switch to Aero mode. The adaptive damping feature adjusts the stiffness of the air shocks to keep the cabin level while the road is uneven.
