Is the New Grand Wagoneer Off-Road Capable?

The Grand Wagoneer originally entered the automotive industry and was widely considered one of the most capable premium SUVs on the market. It was the first vehicle to pair a 4x4 drivetrain to an automatic transmission, unlocking levels of off-road prowess that hadn't been seen before. Unfortunately, production of the Grand Wagoneer came to a halt in 1991 but is finally returning for the 2022 model year! This time, as a luxury extension of the Jeep brand. The 2022 Grand Wagoneer has unparalleled 4x4 capability paired with a luxury car appearance and feel. Please continue reading below to take a look at exactly what gives the Grand Wagoneer its off-road chops!

2022 Grand Wagoneer engine and transmission

The capability of any vehicle begins under the hood, so that is where we'll start. The Grand Wagoneer is home to a 471-horsepower 6.4L V8 engine that provides 455 lb-ft of torque. The V8 engine employs advanced technologies such as cylinder deactivation and variable valve timing to help drivers save on fuel and maximize performance. Torque is sent to all four wheels through a TorqueFlite 8-speed automatic transmission. The TorqueFlite transmission allows for optimal performance, drivability, and fuel economy by providing more than 40 different individual shift maps to optimize shift points for specific driving conditions.

Full-time 4x4 drivetrains

The Grand Wagoneer's capability also relies on the three available 4x4 drivetrains. Quadra-Trac I is standard and provides fantastic full-time 4x4 control without any driver intervention. The single-speed transfer case distributes 48% of torque to the front axle while sending 52% to the rear. Quadra-Trac II employs a two-speed transfer case and sensors to monitor wheel spin. When a loss of traction is detected, the two-speed transfer case will automatically redistribute as much as 100% of the torque from the engine to the axle that has the most grip. Quadra-Drive II, with an electronic limited-slip rear differential, can instantly detect tire slip and redistribute the torque. In some events, the system will proactively limit or eliminate slippage by anticipating a loss of traction and taking preventative measures.

Quadra-Lift air suspension

The Grand Wagoneer is available with Quadra-Lift air suspension. The four-corner air shocks provide the Grand Wagoneer with an added 3.6 inches of lift span. With five adjustable height settings, Normal Ride Height (NRH), Park mode, Aero mode, Off-Road 1, and Off-Road 2. The Grand Wagoneer has an NRH of 8 inches of ground clearance. Park mode provides all passengers with easy entrance and exit by lowering the ground clearance to 6.4 inches. Aero mode drops the springs to 7.4 inches, providing better aerodynamics for on-road performance and fuel economy. Off-road 1 raises the springs one inch from NRH, providing 9 inches of ground clearance for better clearance on tough road surfaces. Finally, off-road 2 clears the ground by 10 inches for crawling over rugged terrain. The control switch that toggles the Quadra-Lift system is on the lower center console, flanking the aluminum shift knob.

Selec-Terrain traction management

Selec-Terrain traction management is available for all the 4x4 drivetrains. The five drive modes are controlled by a toggle switch on the lower center console. Selec-Terrain electronically coordinates 12 different braking, powertrain, 4x4 torque split, and suspension systems, including transmission shifts, throttle control, and more. Auto mode will allow the systems to adapt to varying road and weather conditions automatically. When the driver selects Sport mode, the Quadra-Lift system will drop to Aero mode, and the throttle and transmission shift points will be optimized for fun-to-drive performance. Snow mode lifts the air springs to Off-Road 1 and also adjusts the traction control system and transfer case to provide optimal traction on snow-covered roads. Sand/Mud modes also raise the suspension to Off-Road 1 while also being more sensitive to wheel slip and reacting with torque redistribution. Finally, Rock mode lifts the Grand Wagoneer to the maximum ride height of 10 inches. Meanwhile, the throttle, differentials, and transfer case coordinate for low-speed crawling control.
