Jeep Wrangler Powertrain Options

Since 2011, the Jeep Wrangler has come standard with one engine. This standard engine is the Pentastar 3.6L V6 engine that boasts 285 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. Available for select Wrangler trim levels is a 2.0L turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine that delivers 270 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. Finally, exclusive to the Wrangler Rubicon 392 is a 6.4L HEMI V8 engine that rips out a heart-pounding 470 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. While the engines create the power, the 4x4 systems use this power to achieve everything the Wrangler is capable of. Standard equipment for most Wrangler trim levels is Command-Trac part-time 4x4, which comes with 2-wheel drive, 4-High, 4-Low, and Neutral modes, allowing drivers to customize their capability based on the road or trail conditions. Meanwhile, Selec-Trac 4x4 is optional. Selec-Trac 4x4 features a full-time automatic transfer case with two-wheel drive, 4-Auto, 4-Low, and Neutral. The main difference is the 4-Auto mode. When the driver selects 4-Auto, the Wrangler runs in rear-wheel drive when driving on dry, smooth roads. Meanwhile, when the rear wheels experience a loss of traction, the front wheels will be engaged with an even torque split to regain traction. Meanwhile, when the 4-Low mode is selected, the transfer case's clutch pack locks, splitting torque 50/50 between the front and rear axles. Finally, Rock-Trac part-time 4x4 operates similarly to Command-Trac but offers a gear ratio of 4:1 in 4-Low mode for greater off-road control. While this is exclusive to the Rubicon trim, the Rubicon X comes with Rock-Trac full-time 4x4, which offers the same low-range gear ratio but works more like Selec-Trac.

What is the Jeep Wrangler 4xe Powertrain?

The Jeep Wrangler 4xe was first announced for the 2021 model year, creating the brand's first-ever electric vehicle. The Wrangler 4xe uses a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle powertrain, seamlessly blending the benefits of a gas-powered engine and EV powertrain. Under the hood sits the aforementioned 2.0L turbocharged I-4 engine. Instead of a traditional alternator, an electric motor is mounted to the front of the engine, providing a more seamless stop-start function and optimal regenerative braking. Meanwhile, another electric motor is placed inside the transmission, replacing the torque converter to provide instantaneous torque output. These two electric motors are powered by a 400-volt 17.3-kWh lithium-ion battery pack. This setup provides the Wrangler 4xe with an impressive 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. Meanwhile, it also maximizes fuel efficiency with 49 MPGe, 21 miles of all-electric driving range, and up to 370 miles of total driving range. The Wrangler 4xe comes standard with Selec-Trac 4x4 for optimal torque distribution and performance across a wide range of terrains. Meanwhile, the Wrangler Rubicon 4xe comes with Rock-Trac full-time 4x4. A feature that is unique to the Wrangler 4xe is the E-Selec drive modes, including Hybrid, Electric, and E-Save. Hybrid prioritizes electricity while using gas power to supplement additional power when it is requested. Meanwhile, electric mode entirely disables the gas engine for up to 21 miles of electric driving. Finally, E-Save mode can either be selected to save battery power for a later time and recharge using the Max Regen feature or will automatically engage when the battery becomes depleted.  Meanwhile, the Hybrid Electric Pages on the center touchscreen show you critical information about the PHEV powertrain.

The 2024 Jeep Wrangler lineup features a wide range of trim levels, including Sport, Sport S, Willys, Sahara, Rubicon, all-new Rubicon X, and Rubicon 392. Throughout the lineup, there is an impressive range of features. However, the lineup begins out impressive enough with the Sport trim and the new features it introduces. Outside, the newest Wrangler generation brings out a new stealth antenna to replace the previous generation's steel mast, which was notorious for getting snagged on branches during a trail run. The grille is also updated with Neutral Gray Metallic bezels, black textured slots, and a body-color surround. Further, ten new wheel designs with various sizes, colors, and spoke patterns are available. Additionally, two new body colors, Bikini and Anvil, were introduced for 2024. Inside, new slim air vents are added to the dashboard, while the circular outboard vents stay to retain that classic Wrangler feel. The most notable cabin update is the standard 12.3-inch Uconnect 5 touchscreen with a landscape orientation. The Wrangler's cabin also gains optional 12-way power front seats and newly standard side curtain airbags. The all-new Rubicon X takes the traditional Rubicon and adds the Xtreme 35 package, which features 35-inch BFGoodrich T/A KO2 all-terrain tires, a forward-facing off-roading camera, high-strength steel bumpers, a winch-capable front bumper, an available factory-installed Warn winch with an 8,000-pound capacity, and more.
