Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles, otherwise known as PHEV, combine the power of an internal combustion engine and electric motors with a rechargeable battery pack. The Grand Cherokee 4xe, in particular, uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 cylinder engine, an engine-mounted electric motor, a transmission-mounted electric motor, and a 400-volt lithium-ion battery pack. This setup gives drivers a satisfying 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of instant torque while maintaining the gas equivalent of 56 miles per gallon!

The name 4xe is short for 'four-by-electric', a conjunction of the phrases four-by-four and electric vehicle. Therefore, as one might expect, 4x4 comes standard with all Grand Cherokee 4xe models. Standard equipment for the Limited 4xe trim is Quadra-Trac I 4x4. This system operates in full-time four-wheel drive and constantly monitors road conditions. When the system detects a loss of traction, up to 100% of available engine torque will instantly be transferred to the axle that has the most traction. Meanwhile, the Overland and Summit trims provide an added layer of capability with Quadra-Trac II. While it is a full-time four-wheel drive system like Quadra-Trac I, Quadra-Drive II uses a two-speed transfer case instead of a single-speed. This offers drivers a 4-Low mode, which makes for better traction at low speeds. Exclusive to the Trailhawk trim is Quadra-Drive II with an electronic limited-slip rear differential. This is similar to Quadra-Trac II in that it has a two-speed transfer case. However, it provides maximum off-roading abilities with locking front and rear axles to keep the wheels moving at the same time. Meanwhile, the rear differential gives it the ability to send up to 100% of available torque to a single wheel to counteract slippage.

The Grand Cherokee 4xe's E-Selec buttons give drivers the ability to monitor and control the hybrid system's usage. The E-Selec system defaults to Hybrid. This uses electric power when idling or coasting and only engages the gas engine when additional power is needed. E-Save mode cuts power from the electric motors, operating solely on gas power to recharge the battery through regenerative braking and save the power for a later time. Lastly, Electric mode does the opposite, cutting off the flow of fuel and shutting off the gas engine for up to 25 miles of silent, emissions-free driving. Electric mode can be selected as long as the battery has at least 1% of the charge remaining.
