Ram just keeps on outdoing themselves to deliver the most powerful and most capable trucks on the market today. Ram just announced the all-new 2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel, which hits the market as America's most powerful half-ton diesel pickup truck with 480 lb-ft of torque. Ram also announced for the first time ever you'll be able to purchase the Ram 1500 Rebel with the EcoDiesel engine.

So you already know the new EcoDiesel engine offers massive amounts of torque but you're wanting to learn more about this brand new engine. Well, follow along as we break down everything there is to know about this new EcoDiesel engine. First off, this is Ram's third-generation of the turbocharged 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V-6 engine. This engine is rated at a massive best-in-class 480 lb-ft of torque at 1,600 rpm. That is a 14 percent increase from the previous-generation EcoDiesel which peaked at 1,200 rpm. Torque wasn't the only power source that saw improvements. Horsepower was improved to 260 at 3,600 rpm which is an 8 percent increase over the previous generation.

While the overall power of the EcoDiesel engine saw massive improvements, the engine also received improved vibration, harshness, noise levels, and fuel economy. NVH or vibration and harshness saw improvements due to the individual bearing caps used on the heat-treated aluminum cylinder heads. Once again NVH has been reduced by the use of lightweight sandwiched polymer/metal material in the lower portion of the two-piece oil sump. NVH was further reduced by offsetting piston pin by .03 millimeters from the centerline. The EcoDiesel engine also uses a forged steel crankshaft and connecting rods, both of which increase the strength and durability of the engine.

The dual overhead camshafts of the EcoDiesel come with four valves per cylinder and a 60-degree angle between cylinder banks. The block itself is cast with compacted graphite iron which dampens vibrations and adds strength. A bedplate further adds rigidity to the compacted graphite iron. The chain-driven overhead camshafts use roller-finger followers and the aluminum alloy pistons are cooled on the underside via oil jets.

Ram made several other significant changes to the third-generation EcoDiesel engine which includes a new-generation water-cooled turbocharger with variable geometry turbine. The new turbocharger increases the responsiveness and efficiency of the engine during transient conditions. The exhaust gas recirculation system design now uses a dual-loop low and high-pressure system. The compression ratio of the engine has been improved to 16.0:1 from 16.5:1. The high-pressure direct-injection fuel injector nozzles were redesigned to coincide with the newly designed combustion chamber. New lightweight aluminum alloy pistons now include thinner rings and low-friction coating on the pin and side skirts which in turn reduces losses. The last item to see improvements is the dual vacuum pump system which uses an electric and new mechanical low-friction pump with new blades that improve overall system efficiency.

We're not sure about you but we're pretty excited for the third-generation 3.0-liter EcoDiesel engine to be released. Until then you can shop our entire lineup of brand new Ram 1500 trucks right here.
