Have you been considering bringing a new small SUV home that will able to get you around town and the world beyond? Then, to fill that need, there are two vehicles that we would suggest you keep in mind. Those being the 2019 Jeep Compass and Kia Sportage, two small SUVs that are prepared to get you where you need to be with all the comfort and style you deserve to travel in. But if that's not enough to help you decide, then continue reading as we go ahead and compare what each vehicle brings to the table in order to make it easier to determine what vehicle would be the best for you.

2019 Jeep Compass Power & Handling

Across its quartet of trim levels, the 2019 Jeep Compass offers a standard 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine capable of reaching 180 horsepower and 175 pound-feet of torque. Each of the Compass trims come with front-wheel drive as its standard option, but all-wheel drive is also available for each trim except the Trailhawk, which comes with all-wheel-drive as a component of its standard equipment. The Latitude and Sport trim levels come with a six-speed manual transmission, but most of the Compass line find themselves utilizing either the nine-speed or six-speed automatic transmission options.

2019 Kia Sportage Power & Handling

The Kia Sportage offers two available engines, though which you get is predetermined by which trim you've chosen. The EX and LX trims each utilizes a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine that manages to put out 181 horsepower and 175 pound-feet of torque. A turbocharged 2-liter 4-cylinder engine is equipped to the SX Turbo, which pushes to put out 240 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. All-wheel-drive is an option for the SX Turbo, though tan option that reduces overall horsepower to 237 horsepower.

2019 Jeep Compass Features & Design

There are four available trim levels offered by the 2019 Jeep Compass, each of which comes with features aimed at making your time driving as easy and comfortable as could possibly be. Starting things off is the Sport trim, which includes a Uconnect system, six-speaker audio system, 7-inch touchscreen display, 16-inch wheels, Bluetooth capabilities, USB port, and air conditioning. Stepping up to the next trim level will bring you to the Latitude, which gives the Compass upgraded cloth seating and simulated leather upholstery, keyless entry, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, keyless ignition, larger wheels, and additional option packages. The most comprehensively equipped trim level available to the Compass is the Limited trim. Taking the features of previous trims and building off of them, the Limited gains automatic dual-zone climate control, leather upholstery, upgraded driver information display, 18-inch wheels, satellite radio, heated steering wheel, adjustable power driver's seat, remote start, smartphone integration for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, heated front seats, and an 8.4-inch Uconnect touchscreen. The last available Compass trim is the off-road-oriented Trailhawk trim. The Trailhawk only comes in a nine-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel-drive configuration, but at the same time differentiates itself from other trims in the lineup with its combination of a Selec-Terrain system for better handling over steep ascents and rocky surfaces, underbody skid plates, raised suspension, 17-inch wheels, tow hooks, and off-roading tires. The Compass series of trims also allows for optional features that include a Cold Weather package, xenon headlights, Beats audio system, onboard navigation system, sunroof, power liftgate, and an Advanced Safety package that features automatic high beams lane departure warning, forward collision warning and mitigation, and adaptive cruise control.

2019 Kia Sportage Features & Design

There are but three available trim levels offered for the 2019 Kia Sportage, so things start a bit less diverse than in the case of the Jeep Compass. The most basic trim available to the Sportage line is the LX, which equips the Sportage with a rearview camera, one USB port, 5-inch touchscreen display, 17-inch alloy wheels, 60/40-split folding and reclining rear seat, CD player, height-adjustable driver's seat, automatic headlights, six-speaker sound system, satellite radio, and rear privacy glass. The next trim level available is the EX trim, which builds upon the established features of the LX with more that include keyless ignition, rear USB charging port, keyless entry, 18-inch wheels, blind-spot monitoring, leather upholstery, upgraded exterior and interior trim adornments, power-folding heated mirrors, and rear cross-traffic alert. The last trim of the Sportage line is the SX trim. The SX trim features include an electronic parking brake, a larger gauge display, LED fog lights, 19-inch wheels, special exterior trim features, a flat-bottomed steering wheel, xenon headlights, and a more powerful engine equipped with a sport-tuned suspension. If those trims seem to be lacking a few features, there are additional packages that add more, such as the EX Sport Appearance package, EX Premium package, and Popular package.

Conclusions

The choice between these two vehicles is a hard one, that's plain to see, but while both bring a lot to the table, our recommendation has to go to the 2019 Jeep Compass. While the Kia Sportage comes into this comparison with a bit more power under its hood, thanks to it having an extra powertrain engine compared to the Compass, it falters when it comes to the other equipment and features offered by the Jeep Compass. All of the Compass's trims feel much more of a substantial step up from the one before it while also offering an off-road-oriented option. Meanwhile, the Sportage trims really need additional packages to fill out what some might otherwise consider standard. So, while the Sportage has a bit of kick, that's not quite enough to put it ahead of the 2019 Jeep Compass.
