Steps to Take in an Auto Accident
It's no news that winter will be here before we know it and with that, you're probably hearing about more auto accidents with the winter weather conditions. If you've never been in an auto accident, you likely haven't had to deal with the process that it brings. With around 10 million car crashes every year (according to the U.S. Census Bureau), it's helpful to be prepared. That's why we want to share these important steps to take in case of an auto accident.
1. Stop and dial 911. When involved in a collision, no matter the severity, you need to pull over and assess the situation. If possible, move the cars out of traffic and activate the hazard lights. Then, be sure to call 911. You'll be helping the case move along smoothly when it comes to dealing with the insurance companies and all the details involved in the collision. Then, stay put until you're told you may do so.
2. Check safety of drivers and passengers. It can be startling to say the least, when involved in an auto accident. Some collisions may be more serious than others, and that's why its important to first make sure that everyone is okay. It's also critical information to give the 911 operator in case they will need to be sending out emergency responders.
3. Swap insurance information. If all involved are okay, take a moment to exchange insurance information. This includes the names, phone numbers, license plate numbers, addresses, drivers license numbers and insurance information from the other party(s). If you happen to have any witnesses to the accident that stuck around, get their name and phone number as well in case you need them later.
4. Take pictures. Make sure to document the damage to your vehicle as soon as you can. These photos can help with the insurance claim.
5. Call your insurance company. Once you have the details of the accident collected, take a moment to phone your insurance agent. They will also help you with any additional steps that you need to take.
Though we hope you never have to put these steps into action, the advice above should help you feel prepared and calm in the event of an auto accident! Drive safely!
